I've waited long enough. I'm surprised there hasn't been someone posting anything yet...Maybe people don't care, but I certainly do.
Why are we teaching our youth that they don't have the freedoms to speak their minds? Recently, two Cowley County Community College students were told just that same thing. That saddens me. I'm an alumni of CCCC. To think that an establishment where I used to feel I was capable of so many of life's possibilities, is capable of telling students they can't express themselves, saddens me even more.
Read the headlines. People are escaping other countries to become American citizens. Some are even risking death, rape and punishment to become Americans, so they can have the freedoms we do — one of those freedoms, let me remind you, is the freedom of speach.
I'm certainly glad that Ms. Bucher had the courage and conviction to take her story public. I hope that citizens of Ark City realize that Cowley is a representation of Arkansas City. Is this really what Ark City is all about? Stifling the youth's voice?
I see a bit of irony posting something of this nature on a moderated forum where it tells you that the comment will not be posted until it has been approved by an administrator. That's kind of funny to me.
I've seen topics listed on this forum that indicate real discussion is needed in Ark City on many different things. There are some issues that people have on their minds that I hope are breaking through the administrator.
Now, sure, you want to filter out obsenities and filthy talk -- but a lot of that can be done automatically with language filters. They replace bad language with other friendly words or XXX them out. Are we censoring actual content here?
I think the Cowley students punishment did not fit the crime. Anyone can speak in cyberspace and should have the freedom of their own individuality, opinions and beliefs. It's too bad that those administrators at Cowley got their feathers ruffled enough by someone's opinion -- could it be that the truth hurt a little too much? Ouch!
I too have been censored in the past on an issue or two. Why, I am not certian. There were no " bad words" or "unacceptable launguage". I just stated the truth on how I saw the issue. I would like to think that our forum is not the only thing being censored in our hometown newspaper. Is it?
I too am an alumni of CCCC. And was suprised when I first heard this story. I side 100% with those students. I also found a site where you can discuss this and anything else UNCENCORED but moderated. It's www.cowleycountyclassifieds.com I'll be suprised if this message gets posted
