We have a new Mexican restaurant that is the real deal. Clue to authenticity: real Mexicans are willing to spend their money there. Having been raised in southern California and loving the flavors of Mexican food, I've been disappointed many times to go into local places that use the word "authentic" and find that the offerings range from so-so to dreadful and are pitifully unauthentic. If there are any Mexicans at all in such places, they are only working there, not eating there. That's why I was so delighted when La Birria opened recently. Here is excellent food, made fresh daily, not just taken out of the refrigerator and warmed up, with flavors I remember from childhood. I hope everybody who loves Mexican food will support this place. It's in the shopping center at Eighth and Kansas, and is open every day but Tuesday.
MB, I don't know what the policy is. I do know that the Traveler does publish feature stories on local businesses which do not fall under the heading of paid advertisement. In this case, my only connection to the establishment is as a customer. I posted the item with the hope that La Birria will not suffer the fate of previous restaurants which served the real stuff and died, while others that think a chili relleno consists of a little triangle of bell pepper buried in a tiny bowl of Velveeta, and that enchiladas should be made with flour tortillas (!), continue to prosper. If you're willing to settle for that stuff, you're welcome to it. But I want a place that dishes up something authentic to last as long as possible so I can enjoy it. If people who prefer the real stuff are going to support the place, they need to know about it.
