I am wondering how people think about recycling in Ark City. I know that there is a Recylce bin/truck at the Senior Center on Saturdays. Trouble is Saturday mornings are not convenient for me. I have heard of a number of cities that have developed curbside recycling that has greatly reduced the amount of trash taken to the landfill. I have driven the streets of Ark City on the various trash days and some people have five, six, seven bags of trash. There are some cities that limit this to two bags a week. The only way to reduce this load is to start recycling. I don't know the status of the county landfill but if we don't change this trend it will be overfull and have to change locations and ruin more land. Landfills are necessary of course, but it would greatly help if we could have a more convenient solution of recycling. I realize that this would be one more expense added to water bills but something has to be done. We need to invest in the future. I would love to hear any comments on this.
The Wichita news stations have commended Ark City and used us as a comparison when talking about recycling in Wichita and other communities on several occaisions. Our system has been economically efficient and effective compared to other communities in Kansas. That being said there is always room for improvement.
If you have ideas or suggestions they should be brought up and investigated. You may have the next great idea, but it needs to be communicated to the people directly involved with that particular project. The best source of communication has been ACCESS ARKANSAS CITY through the city's website. You get to tell the city what is on your mind, the information goes directly to the department involved, and you will get a response back. Go to:
Thank you Commissioner for responding. I was very interested in what citizens thought about the system, it is good to know how you feel about this as well. I am still relatively new to the area and was not aware of the commendations given to Ark City on this. Perhaps I will stop in to the site and leave a note there as well.
I'm terrible at recycling. I do recycle the cardboard boxes from my business though.
My only information was from news stories (specifically on channel 3 and 10 local news) that used Arkansas City as a comparison when talking about other towns. I remember Wichita as a certainty, but I don't recall which other town. This was on separate occaisions for each town.
I do not know where the news obtained their information.
