MORE VANDALISM!

Well here we go again! Sometime Friday night into Saturday morning their was a series of tire slashings along the area of C Street and D Street. Including 2 of my mothers tires. Just great when people are on a fixed income!

That's awful.. Sorry that happened, Me2! I truly believe in Karma.. I just don't understand why people have nothing better to do then to go around destroying property.

Must not have nothing better to do than the obvious answer would be go to bed. Pretty bad when a person has to stay up all night just to make sure someone is not destroying your property!!!! I remember staying out all night when i was younger, but I sure didn't have the need to run around and destroy others property!

More than 40 tires slashed in Ark City Friday

By Judy Welch
April 14, 2008 - 12:55:06 pm

Tires were punctured on the vehicles of more than 40 Arkansas Citians Friday night.

The damage occurred on B, C and D Streets from the 1300 block South to the 1400 block North, according to the Ark City Police Department.

There are no suspects at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call the Ark City Police Department at 620-441-4444 or Crime Stoppers at 620-442-7777.

I sure hope they catch the punks who did this- More than 40 cars?! What's wrong with people?

Btw- That was from Newscow!!

Once these vandals are caught, even if they have paid the standard lawyer $500, make them pay restitution and community service that catches their attention and convinces them to not do it again.

What is the cost of 43 tires? Make them (or their parents) pay it. Every single dime.

Used to be the option was jail or Army.

Ask R. Lee Ermey. It'll straighten them out.

I wish they would go back to that option, Lagonda. Now days, the army doesn't even want them!

I think even cheap tires would render this a felony offense. Anyone know the current $ amount to make this a felony or if this would qualify? I believe it is $1000, but not sure. $50-$100 per tire would put damage at $2150 - $4300 total.

Too bad. They could put together a "crazy brigade" consisting of all of the axe murderers, punk graffiti taggers, tire slashers, etc and send them to Iraq. Just give them auto guns, knives and spray cans. Paratroops, so they can be dropped off from a few thousand feet. Be sure to bring back the planes. We might need them for something useful. Underage? So what. Send them anyway.

If foreign countries thought we would send our miscreants to their lands, they might not oppose us.

It would keep the honest hard working midwestern farm boys and educated college kids from being needlessly killed in the war. Who cares if a few thousand punks are killed? Good solution, I say.

Read R. Lee Ermey's bio. It is interesting. Punk vandal in Emporia (I think), got the judge's option and made a good life in the military.

In all seriousness, I'm certain that someone knows who these people are and can turn them in if well motivated. Just don't let the judges let them get off the hook. Little criminals turn into bigger criminals the second time around.

I know! They walk into the courtroom the first time scared to death. They walk out thinking, "Hey, that wasn't so bad!"

I don't know why they do not learn their lessons.

Thank goodness some kids were blabbing their mouths around school! Also, it really doesn't surprise me they weren't held in juvenile detention, wouldn't of hurt them to sit awhile in a lockup and think about what they have done since it wasn't the first time they vandalized some things. Well hopefully their parents don't let them get off scott free here. I got in trouble in middle school back in my day and that one look from my dad and I knew I was done for. Took me over a year to get my freedom back and for them to trust me again!

The cops were talking about restitution, but it didn't sound like anything beyond that was going to happen to the kids. These are apparently habitual vandals and may be responsible for much of the vandalism in AC, (at least from what I take from the article). ;)

They were released to their parents.

A whole lot of good that will do.
Same parents that let them do it in the first place.
You know, the cops won't release the names of minors.
The traveler won't because of the liability issues that come with it being a newspaper.

Nothing that says an independent blog couldn't.
Different rules for anonymous postings.
Might help to put them under public scrutiny a little.

They are in really bad need of a day before a tough judge and about 6 months of community service.
Not just Dad's open wallet.

WEll why the heck were they out at those hours anyways????where are the parents???

"An attempt was made to place the juveniles into custody in a juvenile facility, but that was denied and they were released to parents," he said.

Through the course of the police interviews, juveniles also admitted to other unsolved vandalism involving painting cars, Wallace said. Police are following up their investigation of those cases.

THAT is what the paper said.....they KNOW they done this...so now what???They go home to parents and DO IT AGAIN!!!! THis is bull**** these kids destroying peoples property and people who are poor cant afford to pay for their destruction. HOw do you buy a new tire when you cant afford to live barley anyways????? Im outraged at this AGAIN. My sister was hit by the window bandit last time. Broke out the  windows in her vehicle....cost them bundle ....and NOONE reimbursed for that....now their tires slashed...and they cant afford to buy new ones. JERKS!!!!!!!I SAY LINE THEM UP AT TOWN IN EMBARRASSING CLOTHING AND MAKE THEM WORK THEIR ASSES OFF!!!!

Okay I have been thinking about this. It seems to me that these kids are not afaid to do these crimes because they arent afriad of a punishment. BUT ,what if they are made to do something they really dont want to do for punishment? Can they pay all this back....I doubt it.They are kids. BUT...mowing season is here.....how about they are given a list of yards to mow....MANDATORY.....and guess whos???? ALL THE PEOPLE'S TIRES THEY CUT. These people done nothing wrong and had to PAY for these kids crimes...so how about these kids are forced to now go mow and upkeep all those yards????FREE,no pay. They work to make up their damage. And WHAT IF this word travels..."OH MY GOD,WE HAD TO MOW ALL THOSE YARDS ALL SUMMER FOR FREE....TOOK ALL MY TIME,AND COULDNT DO NOTHING ELSE".....i BET KIDS WOULD NOT BE SO QUICK TO TEAR UP STUFF AND WOULD BE AFRAID OF GETTING CAUGHT.

Probably not a good idea to involve the vandals further with the victims, unless you could give the victims a baseball bat and 10 minutes of privacy.

The vandals described the first vandalism as targeted toward specific people. There is a chance they would go back and harm the victims if they were required to perform forced services (lawn mowing, etc) for them. There is no shortage of areas that the city needs to have mowed or cleaned up. There are dozens of city properties and abandoned lots that could be worked on. The advantage to having them do community service is not rehabilitation, because that probably won't work, but is to make them aware they are being monitored, make them too tired to run wild at night, and occupy them during the times they might be committing a crime.

I'm just guessing here, but I'll bet these kids routinely sleep until noon on the weekends.
Get their happy butts up at 5:30 AM for a 6:00 AM Saturday and Sunday job running a leaf blower for 4 hours. There is graffiti at the park? Give them a paintbrush and scraper and tell them to get to it. Doesn't matter if they put the graffiti there or not. It is a job that needs doing.
It would do them and the city a lot of good.

It will catch their parents' attention too.

The restitution for damages? Make the parents pay it in cash.
Don't try to make the kids work it off. They couldn't do it. It's too much, and you would eventually have to say "well, it's not going to work so you kids can just go home now". Not good enough.

Excellent idea, Arkiegirl. Only, make sure they wear bright colored t-shirts which read "I broke the law in Ark City!".

They do this kind of thing in Howard, Kansas (minus the t's).
