Good mornin all... I'm a new resident to Ark city and have been looking for an informal chat area to meet new people.Figured why not try this. This way I can get all the news and some info at the same time. Finding work out here was quite interesting but that mission is completed. Now to learn as much as I can hopefully meet new people at the same time. Well hope to chat more later. Thanks for your time.
Welcome to our city, as you can tell we like to recycle our lime from the water plant and use it to stripe out streets,, what a great cost saveings to our street department,, you will love living here this is one of the few cities where you can hang plywood over your business windows, dump chemicals in the street and pay taxs to make sure it continues to happen,, good choice on your move here not many places like this left!!
Welcome Michael to Arkansas City, It's not as bad as the two sourpusses above are claiming it to be ( JUST kidding guys).. Sure we have our share of problems in this town.. But it's a good place to live... This is a great board for info and such!! Anyways- Welcome!!
On the other hand, in the spring when things bloom, the town smells like a perfume factory, you can generally get a decent breakfast for not too much jingle on Summit Street, the local parades and county fairs and festivities look like something out of a movie from the 50's (you expect a film crew and John Candy to walk around the corner), if you are into boating, there is Kaw Lake about 20 minutes away, and the bad kids have always hung out at the racetrack. Lots of fun.
You can drop some $ at the brand new casinos, hardly a month goes by without some sort of local concert and if you are into italian food, next to the copshop and decent pizza also over on Summit. Hardware store with looks and service straight out of the 1890's, an experience you cannot have in any other place I can think of.
Free 4th of July with the fireworks set off in a valley and viewing up on the hill. Definitely recommend it. There are no fern-bars and most everyone that drinks goes to a bar to get SF drunk, so watch out. Hillbillies and alcohol don't mix well.
Not much money in the local jobs, but if you show up and work hard, generally you have security and flexibility in AC that you don't get elsewhere. Housing is crappy, but not too expensive and you can almost always run into home-townies at the 2 malls and Warren theater in Wichita, which is not too far away. If you need 911, the local cops show up in about 3 minutes and will shoot or jail anyone who really needs it. They are then released, but that is another thread.
If you are into bluegrass or celtic music , the sister city, Winfield has Walnut Valley Festival, the home to the national flat-picking contest. Take your RV (or rent one) and stay for days at the festival. WCR for modern country music. Really great car show in Paris Park in fall. Decent nature center with eagles if you are into birding. Local art shows in the park. AC comes alive in the fall.
Welcome to town. If people seem stand-offish, don't take it to be intentional. That is the local zeitgeist. Stay with them. Everyone thinks that they are friendly to others. It's just sometimes hard to see what the he## they are talking about. Me too. Sometimes. :0
Work at it and you will find some good friends.
Good luck, and welcome to AC. There is a lot to like.
Good way to meet people? Volunteer at the Burford Theater restoration or at the Homes for Humanity project. That will get you started. They are all good folks with open arms. Take your hammer. Good cause.
Extra points if you find out who makes world class barbecue brisket. Clue: Burford.

LIBERAL LIES!!!! John Candy died a loong time ago. :0) hehe
Now all the vampires have checked in with you, welcome to AC. We use to use leeches to suck out blood but deceided they had too much fun so we go for the jugular ourselves now. Mostly in fun though, hope your choice here is good for you and your family.
Thank you all for your feedback, Im really looking forward to living here and paying lots of taxes....( some roads nee help). Just started at Creekstone so the smell of a purfume factory in spring will come with much welcome. So far everyones been really helpful and really nice. Thank you again for such a warm welcome.... look forward to seein everyone at the RR festival
just be very careful around here if you decide to make a stand on any certain subject,if it involves any of cowley counties ever so special elite, because with every beautiful heaven, comes a very filthy, nasty, well you know!other wise welcome!
Don't forget the many church options in town. Also great civic organizations, Lions club, Rotary, Optimist, I know the Kiwanis meets at noon on Tuesday's at Daisey Mae's and wouldn't mind if you just pop in and introduce yourself. The others probably wouldn't mind either. Check with the Chamber for a listing. Oh yea don't forget the Salvation Army and Red Cross.
yes, there are certainly alot of church options around here. You know, for someone who never saw a cow (upclose) before I finished my first week a Creekstone w/o a hitch. they still laugh at me and call me ol' city boy. Still tryin to figure out where over yonder is ...but I'm learnin. Thank you all for your feedback,Hope to read more soon.Mean while.......remember BEEF, its whats for dinner...hehehe...
Have you ever eaten any of that beef? It is just about the finest beef I have ever seen. The other good part of Arkansas City. If you haven't seen a cow before, how about a buffalo? American bison just west of the cemetery. Pretty cool.
good advice is dont get caught up in the hipocritical church stuff in this area, go to a country church,, these biggots are to busy tring to run other peoples lives to ever make it to heaven,, there will be many false profits in the latter days that sit upon the hill and cast their callased eyes upon you in judgement

That's just tacky. A 'country church' doesn't have hypocrits in it? Look in the mirror. And just so you'll know, there are 'false prophets' everywhere. I'm not sure that you don't sit upon the hill and cast calloused eyes upon others in judgement.
Now, from me personally.. I wish everyone coming to our city would be and feel welcomed. Be blessed
