The only person on this board using race as a negative is Peech, saying that white people are behind all the problems for minorities.
For the LAST time I will say this:
Being against someone coming to this country ILLEGALLY is not racist, no matter how bad certain individuals may want it to be. I know it probably makes them feel better to think that white people are out to get them, because then they have an excuse for being such a B. Some people just need someone to blame because their life sucks, instead of actually doing something to make it better.
I would like to know exactly where I said anything like... even remotely like "white people are behind all the problems for minorities"
and you can call me any name [or first letter of a name]that you want, I don't really care. *shrug* Whatever gets you through your day, sweet thang.
peech said: "...and pay attention to the myriad of positive suggestions I have made here and build on those."
Has anyone seen ANYTHING even REMOTELY POSITIVE come out of this persons arrival on the boards? I had developed quite a bit of respect for lagondas views over the last few weeks, because at least when we did agree on something, we admitted it. I have ZERO respect for this new one. Seems causing trouble and blaming whitey for everything is all they want to do. I'm so over it.
And nowhere have I EVER seen apologize spelled with an s. Even in the definitions she posted it's spelled with a Z. But alas, I'm no English teacher, but my point remains the same... don't nitpick(*), because we all make mistakes or type o's from time to time.
*(Except where callus is concerned... damn that dude's sentence structure is hard to make sense of. It's like he puts a bunch of words on the wall and just throws darts at them to see what order to put them in.) : )
I don't know where you're getting this "whitey" thing from, but stick with it if it helps you feel like you've had an eventful day. *shrug* I do, however, have to disagree with you and say, I'd suggest you go look at my previous posts without seeing red when I stype the words "hispanic" or "mexican" or "racist" aND YOU'LL SEE THERE ACTUALLY ARE SOME IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS IN THERE.
sEEING AS HOW YOU ALSO ONLY READ THE FIRST 1/2 OF MY POSTS, i'LL attribute that as the reason you didn't see that there was a second definition of the word "apologise" spelled just that way.
and a big LOL and a side LAWL for you and your friends with the "worthless to the human race" [srsly?! ha!] comments and the online good ol' boy network [literal network too - ha!] of "gotta agree with ya there!"
Let's either a.) stay on the topic of the thread, which was gang graffiti, or b.) stop posting on it. The whining and arguing gets real old after awhile.
Besides, I went through it all with lagonda a long time ago. Just go back and read her posts and pretend you wrote them... She writes much better than you do anyway, so you might come away feeling smarter.
Got me too! I'm not sure why I thought that either. Sometimes it would be nice to know who you are talking too -- I've come to respect alot of the people on here, and their opinions -- even if it doesn't change mine We're all a little stubborn in that respect -- but that's ok. Sometimes it just makes you feel better and other times more frustrated!
Does Lagonda have a special meaning? Just curious.
argumentitive, extremely opionionated, combative nature, hahahaha not really, he just sounds like a minoroity and figured it was a woman or a college drop out of spanish heritage, 45 year old unemployed ex social worker
Interesting.... I wonder sometimes about whether a person is a male or female if it is not on their profile, but I wonder sometimes if Lagonda works in criminal justice somewhere, because the way somethings are stated in a few of the posts here and on the acflipside blogspot....just a thought!
I'm really disappointed. Here we have probably the best, most observant group of AC folks that have always seemed to be on the leading edge of issue discussion and it has all come down to discussing me? Wow. It's too funny and I'm extremely bored by this. Where is that next issue where I can point out the deeper meaning counterpoint and make everyone all PO'ed because it doesn't fit into their binary logic? Have we solved all of the world's problems? I don't think so. Get back to work and quit daydreaming. ;)
I chose lagonda because I thought it would be instantly recognizable to anyone who had ever gone to school in AC. Don't they teach Cowley County history in junior high (middle school) anymore? They did when I was a pup.
I didn't know it would be all so mysterious. Somebody, somewhere, must be able to flash on what lagonda means. Let me know when you have it. There are even signs.
It could be a conspiratorial hidden meaning having to do with graffiti tagging and gang activity and illegal immigration. It is obviously spanish and means I'm a gabachita. Look up what a lagonda is in your spanish diccionario.
Or a secret password that Hillary Clinton uses when she hires a murderer. Or a special car at the car show.
Or it could be something a lot more plain and non-controversial, dull and pedestrian (which it is).
Thank you for your compliment Lagonda and maybe everyone knows you get all po'ed if we don't agree with you! Think now and again it doesn't hurt to lighten up a little! We aren't getting anywhere that i can see of on this topic, since we all do agree to disagree. Wish we could solve all the the worlds problems, then I wouldn't be so worried about my kids, grandkids and possible greatgrand kids future.
"everyone knows you get all po'ed if we don't agree with you!"
I know. It was a self deprecating joke and I was making fun of myself and the ongoing dialog. You can tell the subject material has gone downhill when it turns out like this. Time for a new subject.
Some of the early settlers persisted in calling the settlement Dutch Creek, due to its nearness to a creek by that name. Fortunately this name was dropped: some years later the creek was renamed Timber Creek. There were other settlers who liked the name first given to the settlement by Mrs. C. M. Wood: Lagonda.
In the latter part of 1869 Mr. W. W. Andrews made a wagon trip back to his old home at Leavenworth, Kansas, where he saw the old family preacher, Winfield Scott. At a meeting of the settlers, Andrews informed them that Winfield Scott had told him: If you are going to start a town down there and will give it my name, Winfield, I will come down and build a house of worship for you. The name Winfield was adopted in January 1870.
The following article was in the Thursday, April 15, 1886, issue of the Winfield Courier.
----------------------------------------------
Is that it? Winfield was called Lagonda then renamed? If so you learn something new everyday!
There was someone on another thread with a personal attack which was calling someone a drunk (not calling me a drunk, someone else). I replied to the original post suggesting no personal attacks and the Traveler folks deleted the thread.
Winfield in territorial Kansas, right at statehood, was named after Winfield Scott, a Methodist preacher from Lawrence. After he found out it was named Winfield, he came to the town and raised money for a church. There is a report from the person who kept the ballot that there was intoxication at the "vote" day and she stuffed the ballot box to change the vote to Winfield.
It was named after a Methodist preacher in Lawrence, not after the General that supervised the relocation of the Cherokees in the Treaty of New Echota, from Georgia to Oklahoma (ever hear of the Cherokee Strip?). That was known as the "trail of tears" because thousands died on the brutal forced march from GA to OK. The general ran for president. Fort Scott KS, Winfield AR, Scott County KS, Scott City, KS, Lake Scott, KS, etc, were named after the general at the same time Winfield was named, but Winfield KS was named after a preacher in Lawrence, not after the general who relocated the Cherokees 18 miles south of the town.
Good thing too. Even though he was considered a very popular national hero, the Indians hated Gen Winfield Scott and would not have taken it lightly. Lagonda was a city built on leased Osage land. There were serious Indian insurrections in that time.
The General drove an Aston Martin Lagonda and had problems with carbon on the valves and all the electricals because it was a British car. :)
Leavenworth, not Lawrence. And the car also had other problems. The windows were tinted to 28%. He would have been ticketed, but in Territorial Kansas, they didn't have reliable measurement devices.
County officials consider impact of gangs locally By JUDITH ZACCARIA Lifestyles Editor
If you think that gangs are a problem only in big cities like Wichita, think again. Three police officers gave a sobering presentation on gangs to a crowd of about 100 persons Tuesday night at the Winfield Community Center.
The program, sponsored by the Winfield Human Relations Commission, was in two parts. In the first part, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department deputies Narcisco Narvais and John Scaglione gave an overview: What constitutes a criminal gang, their history, their movement into the Midwest, gangs currently operating in Wichita, the exporting of gang lifestyle through the media.
The second part of the evening was given by Winfield Police Department Master Patrolman Robert Soto, who spoke on the presence of gangs in Cowley County.
The basic motivation for gang membership is respect, Deputy Narvais said. Gangs typically come out of oppressed minorities. People "feel victimized, they feel their safety is a threat," so they get together in a group. Gangs have been part of the American scene since at least 1760, he said.
Ironically, many gangs were begun to protect their neighborhoods. Once they gained local power, however, they often turned to exploitation in the neighborhood and the community.
Kids are attracted to gangs for many reasons: recognition, status, protection, brotherhood, replacement for family, intimidation.
Criminal gangs have three or more members; they work together in crimes to benefit the group; they always have a common identifier - clothes, signals, symbols.
Narvais pointed out that not every group of kids is a gang. Goths are more about a look. Wiccans are into witchcraft but not satanism.
In Wichita, there are about 63 gangs with 3,600 members, he said.
Narvais showed graffiti and translated it for the audience. He said it is so pervasive that sometimes officers miss seeing it for a few days. The various law agencies have to work together to help each other interpret the graffiti.
They have been able to avert several gang battles by finding the graffiti and interpreting it quickly, Scaglione said.
The pervasiveness of gang culture on the Internet and in the arts was striking. It's not just in rap music - though Narvais mentioned such rappers as Ice T and Snoop Doggy as former gang members who are now lauded for their work. Ice T is even on a TV cop show.
Besides the music, there are movies and books promoting gang lifestyle. Gangs are all over the Internet. "You can see gang information on Face Book, on My Space, YouTube," Narvais said. "They have their own Web sites."
Gang clothing has become chic. Here's a story Narvais told: California prisons gave the largest clothes to the Hispanic prisoners to make them look foolish. Instead, the prisoners cleaned and pressed their clothing and began wearing it stylishly to mark themselves out - and turned the oppression into a positive for themselves.
Narvais encouraged parents, teachers, church members to be alert for signs of gang involvement among youths. He warned that kids are getting in earlier - as young as seven - and they're staying in longer - now into their late teens and early 20s. He also gave many suggestions about what to look for in youths' behavior: Changes in behavior, dress, friends, attitudes toward school, church, any authority. He told parents to be alert. Don't pry into kids' lives but pay attention to what you see.
A gang member from Derby High School transferred to Arkansas City High School, Robert Soto said, but the police in Ark City were quick to be aware of him.
"He's a big man when he goes to a town like Ark City," Soto said.
The influx of Hispanic families into Arkansas City because of Creekstone and other businesses has brought gang members in too, he said.
According to Eric Jarvis, Winfield's School Resource Officer at the high school and middle school, there are no gang members in those schools but there is a lot of "interest."
Soto showed many slides of gang graffiti found in Winfield and Arkansas City.
He said gang members are coming into the area to sell drugs. They aren't here in large numbers, but there is a market for their wares, so they will be coming in, he said.
Much of Soto's information comes from inmates at the Cowley County jail. He showed many slides of gang tattoos on the prisoners and translated them for the audience. A number of the inmates identify themselves as members of the Aryan Nation, so the gangs are by no means limited to people of color.
Almost all of them claim they are no longer involved in gangs, Soto said, but he isn't convinced.
"The guys believe they are soldiers, they are doing the work" of the gang, Soto said.
He listed the known gang influences in the county. At least two dozen have individuals who are showing allegiance to them.
One of the reasons police do frequent stops of autos for what seem like minor infractions is to check on who is in the area. "Pretextual stops are perfectly legal in Kansas," Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said.
