Yup, voluntary tax money. Gambling was around long before the lottery was legal and will be around long after we're all dead. It's obvious there's a demand. We can take advantage of that demand to help lower our taxes or let the tribes get all the money and see nothing out of it.
Longtimer, let s hope the state govenment will be true to us and lower taxes with this new gambling won't just allow them to find more money to spend on other projects! We will have to see if the taxes get lowered!!!! We can always hope!
As long as the casino's have been down south, has anyone seen an effect in Ark City? I mean other than several people traveling 10-20 miles for minimum wage jobs? Oh wait, I did have a couple of friends who have suffered marital problems due to their wives' gambling addictions. An effect, but not positive.
I have not noticed any businesses opening due to the gamblers passing through. As a matter of a fact, don't we have a motel in dire straights right now?
I personally stay clear of the places, and could care less. Several people are throwing away their paychecks and a few owners are getting filthy rich. (Don't think the Indians get all of that money!)

Of course the indians are getting all the money! What, you think some corporation is behind it all? Please! The indians get all the money because we are still paying them back for stealing their land and trying to wipe them out (Although I seem to recall from my history books they tried pretty hard to wipe us out too... can't we all just get along).
Why do we (the taxpayers) continue to pay the indians way, and not the African Americans (for slavery)?
I wish someone had done something bad to white people 2 or 3 hundred years ago, so I could get some free stuff.
The Cowley First Advisory Committee today passed a motion to form a task force to study the effects of a proposed new destination casino to be built at the Wellington exit of the I-35 turnpike.
Winfield City Manager Warren Porter came up with the idea for the task force.
"Assuming there is a casino at the Wellington exit -- whether that's a good deal or bad deal for Cowley County is beside the point -- we want to look at the positives and the negatives on several issues," Porter said.
The task force would look at the effect a casino would have on the Cowley County economy, employment and social issues, he said.
Debra Teufel, director of Cowley First, described the new group as the Casino Opportunities and Challenges Task Force."
"Potentially Sumner County would be one of four casinos in the state and would bring 1,5000 to 2,000 jobs only 20 to 30 miles from us," Teufel said.
Why are they studying how a casino will effect Cowley County, when we already have three casinos within 12 miles of here? Will this study be paid for with our taxes?
I can tell you right now that the only thing a casino on the interstate will do is possibly take customers from the indian casinos South of the border. People who don't like the idea of a casino, or gambling in general, will stay home, and those who like going to the casino will go. It won't corrupt our children, or make people stop going to church, or anything else. Stopping the casino from coming will NOT stopping people from gambling... all it does is let someone else reap the benefits. It's my opinion that if the Kansas Lottery has a plan for a casino, and even a small portion of the money it makes will go toward improving the state, or schools, then I'd rather see people spend their money there than at the indian casinos that only benefit the tribes.
I happen to know that their are some investors involved in these casino's. Few are from Oklahoma, but most are based out of Vegas. I do not think they would invest their $ if they were not getting a return.
