This is a great forum to give an opinion or make a statement, but as for asking questions, there are few here to give a real answer. The doctors are the ones trying to create the new hospital. The city does have a commissioner on the SCKRMC board, but that really isn't board that is developing the new hospital.
Even other commissioners don't know as there hasn't been any development at the SCKRMC meetings worthy of sharing during commission meetings. The board did come to the commission a couple of months ago just to let us know that they have found what they believe to be viable alternatives but did not have enough information to share yet.
Some of the alternatives including separating from the Wichita group to get better financing. We hope to hear more about the various alternatives in the next couple of months. Maybe the Traveler will get the news first.
How hard would it be to replace the leaky windows and the elevator? If the structure is relatively sound remodeling would be a more cost efficient answer I would think. Is there problems with the foundation and the stucture of the building? What is the reasoning for building this new hospital? Just curious.

There are a lot more problems with the building than leaky windows and an elevator. It is a very old building that hasn't been maintained as well as it should have been. Some of the problems are environmental such as asbestos. Other problems are structural such as leaks, rust, and different parts of structure that are not up to code for a hospital. The commission was presented with engineering and architectural reports including the cost of required repairs and remodeling.
As CoVista, the group presented the costs of building a new hospital versus a remodeling that would solve all of the current problems. The new hospital was millions of dollars less expensive (to the hospital). The city had agreed to provide water and sewer to the new hospital, but the combined cost was still less than remodeling. The new facility would also be able to provide an additional number of services. The area also has room for future growth for labs, private offices, and other medical facilities.
Another feature of the new location of the hospital is an additional 100 acres that can be used for other business. New hospitals usuall attract motels, restaurants and other services for visitors. A new hospital could eventually bring more than just better medical services.
When I ask questions, please don't feel like it is necessary for you to answer them. I know as well as you, we never know who is reading these posts. For me, this is much more than just an opinion forum. For me it is nice to know if there are those who share my opinion or don't share my opinion. For me it is a way to share thoughts and ideas with others in the city, who, I may know or not know. By asking these questions, we have gotten some answers from you in regard to the city's plans on many things. You have cleared up some things by answering, and made more questions by answering others. It is, what it is. There are no rules other than no profanity. I don't believe there are any stupid questions. Just unanswered ones. Who knows. Someone may be reading this that CAN answer some of the questions about the hospital. I know the city isn't sponsoring the new hospital, but it has commited a certain amount of money toward it.....water under the bridge. If the hosptial is privately owned, it won't raise my taxes. I don't have to choose an in town DR if I don't want to support an extremely high medical care bill. That is my choice. All medical bills are too high. We will see if they can swing this thing. If not, we will just have to keep using the hosptial with the leaky windows because maintenance will not go buy a tube of silcone caulking. Just my opinion!
It wasn't too clear to me. Is the Wichita Group of Doctors out or in?
Does seem like a long time with no visable action. The condition of the structure the current hospital uses just continues to get worse. Last time I was up on the second floor I noticed water leaking in around windows again. And the way that elevator by the Emergency room creaks and groans makes me glad it requires frequent inspections and certification.
One of the best things Ark City has going for it is the excellent staff at SCKRMC but how can we keep them when they have to work in this crumbling building?
I believe we need a new Hospital! With all the newest and best technology. It only stands to reason its the best option we have in Cowley Co. The old Hospital Bld. alone is in bad structual spape and would be uncost effective to fix. I am certian we have enough very good Doctors here now to help pay for the cost of the New Hospital. I also believe a new State of the art Hospital will attract even more Highly Qualified Specicalist. Like Heart, Nerosurgens, Pediactricts and many other types of Specalist. Which will do nothing but good for all are citizens of Cowley Co. I am a firm believer in better, more effecent Health Care. Thats wht a new Hospital means. Thanks
