Kelley introduces drug-testing bill

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Some Republicans in the Kansas House are pushing for random drug testing for people who receive cash assistance from the state.

State Rep. Kasha Kelley (R-Arkansas City) has introduced a bill that would require random drug tests for people who receive welfare.

THANK YOU KASHA KELLEY!

I will support this all the way!

It will be interesting to see if the courts allow this bill, there have been several tries by the feds and other states, but the high courts keep striking them down.

why not alcohol? I know it isn't illegal, but I mean if you have a BA Level of like 1.1 on the Wed afternoon of your test is it any different then shooting herion or something like that?

This is a stupid waste of money. It won't help the problem. When food stamps were actually coupons, people used them to buy dope, cars, furniture, anything. The solution was to create the vision card. Instead of wasting almost a million dollars a year on drug testing, why not make it so the card can't be used for cash withdrawal? why spend money we don't have? This money should be spent on education to solve the real problem!

This is a stupid idea. when foodstamps were coupons, people used them to buy dope, cars, furniture, anything. The solution was the vision card. instead of wasting almost a million dollars a year (which we don't have), Why don't we make cash unaccesable? make the card good for purchases only, and no cash withdrawals? Drug testing won't stop the deviants. deviants know how to beat a drug test. The whole idea is stupid. I know it comes from good intentions, but beurocrats are far removed from day to day reality. This money could be much better spent on education, which in the long run would help solve the problem. can we stop spending money to punish, and start spending money to help? We have too many prisons and not enough community support groups. one of my pet peeves is the term "my baby momma". this means there is not a family environment. can't we spend this money to help single parents? or groups like big brothers big sisters? or even casa? I just don't agree with this thinking.

This is not a proactive idea. When foodstamps were coupons, they were used to buy drugs, furniture, cars, anything. This would be a waste of our money. It would ammount to a million dollars a year. The way they solved the foodstamp chrisis was to invent the vision card. Why don't we make it to where there can be no cash withdwawal? this money should be used for education. My Hope is that we can do away with the term "my baby momma". this term is so repulsive. it means there is not a family value. Why don't we take that million dollars and try to help people? It seems like we are more ready to build prisons than help people. Why not donate that million dollars to big brothers bigsisters? or ronald Mcdonald house? these are just three examples. The reason I think it's a waste of money is : Dope heads Know how to beat a drug test! It's really that easy! it would be stupid to push for this type of legislation!

It's obvious Ms. Kelly's never been poor. Just because folks are poor doesn't mean they use drugs. Over the years I've know many people who were on public assistance, most temporarily. None used drugs and most were ashamed to admit they needed help. Now Ms. Kelly want's to add the stigma of having to submit to a drug test. If all of the people Ms. Kelly says told her they saw poor folk buying drugs did what they're supposed to do & call the police the problem would fix itself. That is IF they actually saw what they claim to have seen. While we're beating up on the needy, why don't we make the poor folk walk around town with a big sign saying "I'm poor and a suspected druggie". Guilty until proven innocent, those are the principles our country was founded on. Yes sir! Makes me proud.

Dan, you hit the nail on the head and have some excellent ideas. Maybe you should write a letter to the editor. Get with some people and let your ideas be known.

If we really cared about the less well-off, why not do away with the taxes on food?

I had to take a drug test to get a job, and are subject to random drug test to keep my job. The only ones that would have a problem with this is the ones that couldnt pass it. And if we can stop 1 person and give more to the ones that dont ant it worth it

A drug test has nothing to do with being poor, i work 40+ hours per week and make over 60K per year, i had to take a drug test to start my job and am subject to random test to keep my job. My tax dollars go to welfare and thousands of other programs. If you are not doing drugs would you be worried about random drug test? I think not! Why should the gainfully employed citizens pay for the mistakes or habits of others. If you do not do drugs you should not worry about this bill as i do not worry about random drug test at my job that pays welfare!

I was glad to see Kasha Kelly want a drug testing . Like others have said  that places I worked there were drug testing and you always knew the ones using. They were worried about getting caught and some did.So the folks getting help with the vision card then they should be tested and maybe get help for their problems.
Also as for Kasha never being poor,no I doubt that, but her parents came from hard working people that took care of their families . Her parents have done well for themselves and saw their children got an education and taught their children to be good citizens. sunflowersmile

Personally, the main reason that I commented first was because I (and I am not proud to admit this) know of several people in this community that are receiving assitance from the state and who are also abusing drugs. Yes, proudly receiving assitance from the state and bragging about it. That makes me sick.
I am in no way implying that every person that receives assistance is guilty of these actions, but those who are guilty should be outed!
AND those who do not abuse the system should be proud to be tested and be given more assitance in order to make an example of those who don't, or can't, or won't.
  AND FURTHERMORE,
Don't even begin to harrass me for knowing people who abuse the system!
What am I supposed to do, call the police? S.R.S.? City Hall? Ghostbusters?

I've tried them all and they could all care less.no

I also think this is a great way to make sure the folks getting help are not abusing the assistance. When people really need help and use the money right, that is fine to get them help, but when they use the money for drugs and do not help themselves to get work and show they appreciate the help then the assistance should stop after they have had help with drug or alcohol and do not get better.
The families that are in need should get it and most people want to do all they can,I believe they should get it and should not mind drug testing. sunflower
Years ago when people got welfare some did not even try to get work or do for themselves and many familes went years on welfare.I have a friend that said most of her grade school years the family lived on welfare money and her parents made no effort to get work and get off the assistance. When she realized where the money came from and they were not having any reason to not work, she was ashamed of her family .She said she vowed she would never put herself or her family through that.sunflowersmile
