Hello all...... I am a local businessman who was very surprised to see the July 7th front page story titled "Nat'l conglomerate profiles local buisness". This article, written by Chris Robinette, details how Microsoft has recently profiled McDonald's Computer Service for it's website. This article insinuates that Microsoft has bestowed some sort of special honor to McDonald's company by contacting him to update his profile on their website. I own a computer company on the south end of town and was also contacted by Microsoft several weeks ago to update my profile. In fact, Microsoft is contacting every one of it's partners. This is just a routine matter for them to bring their records and website up to date. In the article Ralph McDonald is quoted as saying,"His reputation is probably what sparked Microsoft's interest in profiling his business". He also goes on to say, "the Microsoft profile has come up because we are so proactive into bringing stuff into our community". Both of these statements are totally false, as once again, Microsoft is profiling all of it's current business partners.
It is my contention that Mr. McDonald should be aware of this fact, as when I was on the phone with Microsoft updating our profile the first thing they mentioned to me is that they were calling all their partners to update their profiles. I feel that the above statements made by Mr. McDonald are very misleading.
I would also like to say that I always thought that it was a journalist's job to report the news in an unbiased fashion. Chris Robinette has in my eyes failed to keep to that standard. When Mr. Robinette wrote this article he did so in such a way as to elevate McDonald's Computer Service above all the other local computer shops. He took a routine phone call from Microsoft and expanded it into a full blown front page news story. McDonald's contact with Microsoft was nothing more then if your local phone company contacted you to update your yellow page advertisement.
I personally stopped by the Traveler's office this morning and spoke to the editor regarding this article...mentioning all the above facts to him. He seemed surprised and also told me that he "had not yet read the article". I am not sure exactly what an editor's job description is, but how is it that a front page article is appearing in his paper and he is not aware of it? He told me that he would have the reporter get in touch with me regarding his article, but so far he has not contacted me.
I am also very proud of my business and our local community.....where is my front page story? If all it takes is a routine call from Microsoft to make the front page I should have been on there long ago. Rest assured that if Mr. Robinette interviewed me I would not try to mislead the public.
I am "claiming" that due to the fact that I received the exact same phone call from Microsoft as he did.
The first thing the caller did was explain to me who they were (representing Microsoft) and also went on to inform me as to the purpose of the call.
The caller informed me that Microsoft is updating all their partner's profiles in order to be listed on their website. By them asking questions from their standard survey, such as: How many employees do you have? How many MS Office and Windows installtions have you implemented in the past 12 months? What business sectors are you mainly targeting?....and so on. They then build a "profile" of the various partners which allows them to list these partners under the appropiate section(s) of their site.
This is nothing more than a standard survey (profile) for them. It in no way reflects or singles out any particular company for any type of special recognition.
The above link will show Microsoft partners within 20 Miles of Arkansas City.
You will note that besides McDonalds Computer Services, my business, along with KPM in Winfield are also listed with the same type of business profile. You may also note that all three of our businesses are participating at the same level of partnership (registered partner).
It is just very disappointing to me that such a routine matter such as a Microsoft survey of it's partners could get so blown up as to become a front page news story. By the Traveler singling out McDonalds Computer Service in such a way, I feel it may give the public the wrong impression of all the other local computer shops. This type of "hype" may actually drive business away from our shops, as it gives the public the impression that he was given some sort of special honor by Microsoft...one which was not granted to any other local business, when the true fact of the matter is that every partner is granted this same privilege of being profiled on their site.
For the record- When I posted my above comment- YOUR message was blank. The only thing that was there was the subject line- THAT'S why I asked you to explain yourself.

Sorry...I didn't realize that was the case. I did notice that there was a period of time after my first post when it wasn't showing up correctly.
JJ only gives media coverage to those who float in his boat, you do not have equal play time with the traveler, it is one sided Biased and often abuandant with ignornace
I realized when I read it he was just floating his boat and it was nothing special. You are right, it's a NO BIG DEAL thing but he made it out to be. I have been on the receiving end of phone calls from Mr. McDonald and his wife when they are upset about something and they were so hateful and mean that I choose not to shop his store and I told everyone I know about their phone manners. When his brother became commissioner, a memo was sent throughout the city by the city managers secretary telling everyone to buy from him, how wrong is that?! The editor can talk to anyone at the city to verify this.

That is a big, huge, gigantic mis truth. You know I did not want to call you a lier, but the city buys their computers through the Wiska state contract through HP. Now that info is easy to find on the city web site.
