RE: White Chemical spill at the water plant

report it to the EPA or the state, or just write in on the city website and ask them what it is.

Went down to check this out. It appears they are dumping this substance into a truck at the water treatment plant and then hauling it off. The run-off appeared to me to be spillage from the truck bed. I did not have time to follow it all the way, but am curious to find out where they are dumping this. In the river? What is it? Didn't work up the nerve yet to ask.

I'm surprised Patrick hasn't dropped in to tell us what it is. Maybe it's a harmless byproduct?! Or if it is harmful (to people or the environment), since you said you were going to report it tomorrow, the city will have a crew down there all night cleaning up any trace of it.

I don't come here as often anymore.  I did read it late yesterday and asked the city manager about it today.  I'll get back to you when I hear about it.

I could tell you what I think, but people seem to get mad when I don't give the definitive, checked and certified answer.

To the other poster, if it is lime, it is less hazardous to your car than the asphalt under it.

I'll get back as quickly as I can... or as soon as I get back in here.

Patrick

Patrick,

I can certainly understand why you don't come here much anymore. It has gone down hill a bit lately. I am thinking of giving it up myself.

I enjoyed our debates though.

Patrick if the lime is not caustic to the painted surfaces of a carmm lets just say once it is stuck on your car it is there permanently, that is what the water people told me,, their truck cannot be cleaned that is why it is covered with built up lime,,,, let me borrow that city truck and drive it around in front of your house spilling the stuff all over, see if you or the city manager wouid allow it very long

I am fascinated with your intimate contact and shared knowledge with "water people".  I can see you have done a lot of study on this.

Have you ever noticed the white substance along the 1st and 3rd base lines at a baseball game, or across the field every 10 yards at a football game?  Sometimes it is called chalk, but in fact it is usually lime, though there are alternatives that are sometimes used.

As for the white stuff on the street, yes, it is lime.

"The lime is added to treat the water for calcium and magnesium.  The product then settles out of the water and is hauled off and stockpiled at the well fields.  For some reason, there was a spill during the last transport to the well fields.  It isnt likely to do any damage to the roadway, cars, etc."

I've personally been a member since '06 and I know others have been around for a while too.. I think I've mainly done more reading then posting- But in the last month I agree that it has gone down hill. Before there wasn't fighting and all the nastiness that has been going on, Opinions we're respected... Now I think people are posting just to see their posts, Beating dead horses and not letting things go... Believe me, I don't agree with 95% of the politics on this board, That's why you don't see me post in those threads.. You know that saying, Pick and choose your battles. But I don't think anyone should leave the board because of it, Ignore it.. It takes a bigger person to walk away without the last word and shows how weak a person is when they think they have to have it or they feel the need to be mean. I know it's easy to lose your temper when your talking about something you feel passionate about, But when you've said your peace- Move on.

Patrick, I think you've been under appreciated, You've been really helpful.. Quick to answer a question or if you didn't know the answer you went and would find out for us. I don't think that many of us have taken the time to say Thank You- I know you get jumped on alot, But hope you stick it out.

There is lime and there is quicklime. What is it? What is the Ph? If it is caustic and a hazard to children which it probably is, the city should proceed at it's fastest pace to prevent any public exposure to the chemical spill. If a kid played with it and rubbed his eyes it is likely blindness could occur and that would be the city's fault for creating a public chemical hazard.

I have deleted this post as I wrote it late at night and thought you deserve a better answer.  We should go directly to the source, which I have already quoted, but you should get it directly from the source.

Use ACCESS ARKANSAS CITY as I described in the next post.

Greenpiece- No no, I wasn't directing that towards you.. I'm saying in general he does get jumped on a lot and I feel bad for him and can understand why he is not coming on as much- But your right no one needs to belittle anyone.. I understand your frustrations on this, I would be upset about it and even though it's not affecting me personally I'm concerned about it. Is it a safety hazard to kids? And personal property and what about animals? Wasn't the city fined a while ago for dumping waste in the Walnut river- So anythings possible. Take a sample and send it off for testing and if it is hazardous chemicals then file a claim against the city and have them fix your car. I would also be taking pictures and samples everyday and documenting it... If what you heard about KDHE is true, The city could get fined again and would have to fix anything that they damaged.

For an official definitive answer from the city, the best means is ACCESS ARKANSAS CITY on the city's website:

www.arkcity.org
select CITY GOVERNMENT in the left column
select ACCESS ARKANSAS CITY in the left column

be sure to open an account with an email address so they can respond back.  Select the department, and submit your question.  The information will be processed through that department and upwards through management.  A personal response (from department head or management) will be sent back via email.

No secrets, no misinformation, no excuses.  A real answer direct from the source.

Thank you Greenpiece,

You have confirmed my belief that you and most of the people of Arkansas City don't know how your city is run.  I am a commissioner.  I have almost NOTHING to do with the day to day running of the city.  I have absolutely NO authority.  I cannot even make a decision alone.  The only affect I have is creating and enacting policy in a joint effort with the other commissioners, never alone.  I have no authority to give orders or direct operations.

I asked the city manager and reported back so I could save you the effort of having to do the research yourself.  I tried to make sure that you got straight information to ease your concerns.  I even offered you a way to find out for yourself which would have given you response directly from the head of that department.

I have finally realized that is not what you want.  I'm not sure how to help you as you deny anything that is given.  All I can suggest is for you to find out for yourself.  When you do finally discover the answer, please share it with everyone else, or as in this case, tell them how to find it.

I'm sorry I can't do more for you.  All I can do is wish you good luck.

Patrick McDonald

If the lime sludge is calcium hydroxide that has not been reduced to calcium carbonate it is really bad news. Skin burns, corneal burns, etc. If you are around it, don't be.Clean-up is sand absorption and hauling it away to a landfill.

Keep in mind these are the wastewater folks that dumped a third of a million gallons of filter backflush into the river and were fined by the feds. What a wonderful waste of our tax money.

Sorry.
I mis-typed waste water instead of water plant.
I stand corrected. Thanks.
