Man jailed after stealing ammonia

Last night we went to Winfield's Walmart and saw this first hand- It was a sight to see, Very scary! I was hoping that the Traveler had this posted but they didn't ( It was an AC person who did this) I wanted to know exactly what had happened because some Walmart workers said the guy had a mobile meth lab and had a 2 year old with him ( looks like he is 7 instead)... Man, I just don't get it, That boy is our future.. What kind of a life is his dad setting him up for when he is bringing him along so he can steal chemicals to make drugs.

One of my family members said " See- Look there, We've never had a meth lab in our Walmart... Winfield always thinks they are so much better than Ark city".. Then another one said " Yeah we'll I'm sure it's someone from Ark city."

ONLINE EXTRA - Man jailed after stealing ammonia while child waits in car

An Arkansas City man is in jail Saturday evening after he was seen trying to steal anhydrous ammonia from the Hackney Coop while a seven-year-old waited in his car, according to Sgt. Barclay Wilt of the Cowley County Sheriff's Department.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was booked into the Cowley County Jail on charges of misdemeanor theft. The child was later released to its mother, Wilt said.

Wilt plans on filing additional charges with Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith, including charges of transporting anhydrous ammonia in an unauthorized container and child endangerment.

The man was seen near an anhydrous ammonia tank with a two-liter bottle before running back to his car, according to a witness.

The witness told police that the man threw the bottle, and it may have exploded, but it has not yet been located.

Wilt saw the man's gray Ford Contour heading northbound just south of Winfield near U.S. 77 and 33rd shortly after the call came out describing the vehicle. He then attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the man didn't stop until he reached the parking lot at Wal-Mart, Wilt said.

That is where the vehicle remained for over two hours until a search warrant could be obtained to make sure the vehicle did not have any hazardous chemicals inside.

Officers with the Cowley County Drug Task Force and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation suited up in hazardous material uniforms to perform a thorough search of the vehicle. They located containers of antifreeze, another known component used to manufacture methamphetamines, but did not locate any containers holding anhydrous ammonia.

The scene caused increased traffic at the parking lot, with several vehicles slowing down to see what was going on. Some drivers even parked in the lot and watched as the officers in Haz-Mat suits searched the vehicle.

According to Sgt. Doug Allison of the Cowley County Sheriff's Department, the vehicle and its contents did not pose a health hazard to anyone nearby or inside Wal-Mart.

Officers with the Winfield Police Department and firefighters with the Winfield Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Story inflation. Mobile Meth lab.
It didn't mention a mobile meth lab, only antifreeze in the car.
The last I looked that was still legal.
I wonder if the suspicion of stealing NH3 could trigger a search in the fool's house for other reduction components, ie cold meds, batteries, etc?

Yeah, Last time I checked I didn't say the article said that it was a mobile meth lab, I said that a walmart worker said it was. Learn to read.

Lagonda,
You are correct in the fact the article didn't mention "mobil meth lab".

Any one with a modicum of intelligence, who read the entire atricle would be able to assertain that the fine upstanding, pillar of the community, nominee for father of the year, was just attempting to steal a little anhydrous for his veggie garden.

What kind of bozo would endanger his child or anyone else's for that matter in such a manner.

He doesn't deserve to have children, but then again your ability to have children isn't based on whether you deserve to have them or not. Pitty children don' t have the ability to choose their parents.

The hawk

The newest article mentions the name of the suspect. Tim Richardson, 35

I think he was just mentioned in an editorial the other day as being a former Golden Glove boxer.

"Last time I checked I didn't say the article said that it was a mobile meth lab"... "Learn to read."

Your post said mobile meth lab. Twice. Even though it is not in the article.
I can read. It's very funny. Story inflation. Denying the statement? Priceless.

"What kind of bozo would endanger his child or anyone else's for that matter in such a manner?"

It's hard to know. Pretty stupid people out there. I'm hoping the cops have enough on him to hold him over and do a CPS review on the kid (or kids). If Dad was in then Mom was probably too. A tragedy for the kids. Maybe they can get better parents.

I'm inflating nothing- Not even your huge ego. Again- Learn to read. I said that a Walmart worker said that she heard it was a mobile meth lab, We asked because there was a fire truck in Dillons parking lot... The car with yellow tape around it and men in haze mat suits and cops everywhere it was scary, I also mentioned PRIOR to saying the mobile meth lab that I looked it up because I wanted to know exactly WHAT it was. This was a personal experience post, Not me reporting a story.. You can pick apart and do all that you want, You can also get over yourself. If you wonder why people are short with you, Then look at the above and the way you talk to people.

In no way am I impeaching you on this reply. Just the subject. Not you, so please chill.

In college they teach about journalism, law and evidence. I agree that you are not a reporter and that you may say just whatever you wish about anything, and that is fine with me.

However, there are a few things that always attract my attention on these blogs, and maybe I shouldn't care, but, in all fairness, I have an ability to post here just as you do. Just because we don't agree means nothing, and maybe one of us or both of us may learn something or at least be able to improve our typing skills with this practice.

One of the things that always gets my attention is the common basis for most of the racially oriented and drug oriented posts on this blog. That subject is ad hominem attacks, such as the one stated with the "mobile meth lab".

It is clear that the person arrested was in violation of a crime. No doubt about it.
But then there is the additional information about the non-existent "mobile meth lab". Although you say you didn't know there was no lab when you first saw the scene (and I believe that), you did know it when you posted the description. No harm, no foul, you are not a reporter, and you may say anything about anyone, I get it.

But what that is called is an ad hominem attack and is one of the greatest no-no's in law enforcement and journalism. They teach it in J School 101. The first hour of the first class on the first day of J school.

It is also known as a "smear tactic", where even though someone "is" guilty of something, they are also falsely stated to be associated with something else, someone else, a member of an ostracized group, illegal alien, a gangster, etc.. It is an untruthful additional attack on them personally or for their beliefs or associations. That connection or statement is really not true, but it is there and it effects the view others have of the accused. Whether true or not it sticks.

An example of this is John McCain's association with Charles Keating, the investment banker who cheated many out of millions and then went to prison. McCain was (and is) known as one of the "Keating Five". Was he guilty of anything? Did he cheat old ladies out of their retirements? John McCain? Are you kidding? Of course not. But it stuck. An ad hominem smear tactic. I'll not get into other candidates, but you see a lot of this and it is all dishonest. Most of these people have done enough to accuse them without resorting to dishonest smearing and half truths.

Most of the comments on this whole blog are almost entirely based on a "guilt by association" smear campaigns and it bugs me and I bring this up. It is one of the standard tools of passive aggressives and smear campaigns are just dishonest gossip.

In reviewing my posts, I find that almost all are in response to pointing out the bogus characteristics of these ad hominem posts. Well, there are also the ones where I'm saying folks shouldn't call each other names, but that is similar too, in a way.

I have suggested in the past to raise the standard and let's be more truthful and accurate.

We don't have to. You don't have to. This is a blog. It means nothing.

But why not?

'tis true that you do bring out the worst in people by talking to them like they are stupid. Maybe if you were a little nicer, you would get more people on your side. Your writing has a degree of intelligence to it, but your attacks tend to take away from that.

Not to say I haven't been guilty of letting myself post angry.

Don't post angry.

Trying to keep the discussion linear, honest and rational. I know MB is mad at me because I called her "mobile meth lab" a story inflation.

As Sergeant Friday would say: "Just the facts, Maam".
