RE: Outdoor Fun IN and around Arkansas City

Greenpiece, will you elaborate on the sighting of the mountain lion near 6th street pond? Please tell me about it. I am sure I am not the only one that would like to hear about it.....if it has been in the news here locally I didn't hear about it.....confused

I saw one by McFarland's Farm a couple of years ago coming back from Wichita. It was crossing the blacktop and several cars stopped to watch in amazement.

I had one cross right in front of me with my then 2 yr. old son several years ago down by the dike off East Chestnut. It stopped right in front of us and I couldn't believe what I was seeing and decided I better go back to my car and I turned back around to make sure it wasn't following me and it was gone. It could have been a really bad ordeal -- but it appeared as shocked to see me and my son as we were to see it!

OMG! I meant the McClung farm. It must be that sleep deprivation again. I am going to take a nap!

With Arkcity being between two rivers it is going to have lots of wild life in and around it. I have been told many times by game wardens in this area that cougar or mountian lions are not in the area. But it appears that is not true. I personally haven't seen one of these big cats loose in the wild here but saw one a few years ago crouching in a pen watching a small child toddling along near the cage. He was watching just as a domestic cat does when he is stalking a mouse. It was hard for me to watch this cat do this, knowing that if there were no barrier the cat would have pounced on this child. I would keep a close eye on your children in and around the rivers for sure now that these big cats have been sighted.

This was taken within 20 miles of town.  I'm not at liberty to say where exactly, because the property owner doesn't want anyone out there looking for it.
