Skyline Road needs a sidewalk in a bad way. I know that this won't happen overnight but it does need to happen. Am I the only one that sees small children, mothers with children in tow, and many other people day and night walking in the street on their way to Wal-Mart? With all the snow and ice we've had recently I'm surprised nobody has been struck by a vehicle. Is that what will have to take place before a sidewalk is built?
I'm not exactly the best with road names, could someone paint me a picture or something so that I can place it? I have a particular road in mind which I think it might be, but want to make sure we're on the same page before responding.

Skyline road is the one that runs at the North end of Town from the corner where the North End Gas Station/Convenience store sits past Skyline Manufacturing Plant and on out to Cowley 3

It's the street that has the sign saying 'Skyline'

I would agree with you on that, A sidewalk would be nice in that area. I also think that DEER CROSSING signs need to be placed on radio lane... From 6th st ( by clinic) to right by Ace Hardware. The reason I say this, Is if you drive by that area at night you will see dozens of deer out in the fields and might have 6 or so run infront of you. I've had more deer run out infront of me there than anywhere else. If we can have those signs on the bypass, Why not there.. ?

KDOT will not place "Deer Crossing" signs in an area such as you mention until there is a documented deer/car collision.
No offense, But I feel that is asinine that we have to wait until there is a "deer/car collision" before taking action.. Aren't caution signs there to caution drivers of the dangers so it can be preventable?
No offense taken. Chalk it up to bureaucracy. KDOT will NOT erect a "Deer Crossing" sign until there is a collision and a ploice report. Similar to nothing being done at a dangerous intersection until someone is injured or worse. kdot.gov you`ll find it all there.
KDOT will never put up a deer crossing sign! Why you may ask? KDOT does not control the signage inside the City Limits unless it is part of the KDOT system. Radio Lane is not it would be up to the city to put up a sign if warranted. If you want a deer crossing sign in the City tell the City! Hope this helps.
Thanks MC! Patrick.. Ohhh Patrick.. Where are ya? :) Are you reading this?
It was just a thought. It would be nice for people to see the signs and remember that they are right there and to maybe be more alert and drive a tad slower. It's a half a block away from summit, McDonalds, A bank.. Lot's of stores.. ect. And like I said.. Any given night you have 5-6 run out infront of you.

I'm reading and watching. I hear that this time of year there are more car/deer accidents than car/car accidents. Are signs going to help? My personal experiences in town with deer have been right in front of Wal-Mart. Both times early in the morning running from west to east. I'm sure there are many other places that are just as bad. Near both of the bridges car/deer accidents are pretty common.
I'm thinking that there are probably more areas that need signs than we could cover. KDOT spends a lot of money on radio and TV each year to warn people about deer this time of year. It would help if people were trained to be aware of where they are driving. Any open or wooded area would be suspect, though I have seen deer running down the middle of North A and North 8th streets, though I've heard more stories about deer in the middle of the streets on the south end of town.
Signs aren't too expensive and I'm sure we can get something done. I will pass this request along to the city manager and the street department. I will also try to remember to bring it up at the next commission work session.
Instead of waiting to talk about the deer crossing signs until the next commission meeting or work session, I recommend that those interested make that suggestion through the new customer service software by the city. That will get the ball rolling, and allow people that are interested to see how it develops. It will also get directly to the people who can make things happen much faster.
Go to the city website: www.arkansascityks.gov
select: City Government
click on: Access Arkansas City (in the left column)
You can provide the specific detail and information directly. You can check back as often as you like on the progress of your suggestion (complaints can be listed as well). I think you will be able to expect a little faster service, more information, and a resolution to the problem (I believe also with an explanation on the how/why it was done this way).
Give it a try. This is a brand new system, so keep an eye on it. I distrust new software for the first couple of months. Let me know how it works.
