Hey ksu_nutzer
When you come home on occaision do you ever drive through Winfield? I have spent a lot to time there and find they park in their front yards too. They just don't have as many homes on main street as AC does. Drive some of the side streets and you will find they have cars in front yards, well....in some neighborhoods anyway! Besides, I don't care what we do, Winfield is going to laugh.
I agree this will give Winfield some thing to LAUGH at, they will say when you go to a Party in Ark City the owner of the property will need to go to the City and get a permit so you can PARK some place around their house. BE GOOD FOR A BIG LAUGH
Yes Redd, I still make it to both towns oftend (at least monthly) and I hope to move back to Action City Someday. (Yeah, I am messed in the head). Parking in the yard just falls under that catch all nuisance laws. Not that I agree with it, but I understand it. Just like grass too tall and couches on the front porch. All things I have been guilty of. I can understand wanting to park in your own yard. If it decreases the property value of your own house.. Who cares?? But when it starts to effect the nieghbors value (and it does), that is when something unpopular has to be done. And let us not forget that the city collects a tax from your property based on it's value. If the city feels like the blite of yard parking is going to cause a loss in tax revenue, you can bet they will do something to stop it. But if you still feel the need to park in the yard, please don't block the sidewalk. You might get a second ticket for that.
BUT, if you park in front of the mail box the post office won't give you your mail anymore! If you don't have a driveway, and can't park in front of your mailbox either, then where do you park?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Maybe the city could build a parking gargage and charge all the poor souls that don't have driveways to park in it, and make even MORE money from the citizens of the town. If the city continues to ignore their own unfinished projects, bad streets, water & sewer lines, etc. can we get up a citizen's commitee and charge the city $100 a day until they get it done????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Just a thought...

oooo...was that below the belt? I believe our local "Governing Body" is suffering from "Little Man Syndrome". They want so much to turn "my home town" into Wichita or Topeka. To go down in history as making great changes to our "backwoods", "podunk" way of life. For "Our" own good of course. Because "We" just don't know any better.
What they won't admit is, because of their efforts, the population of this once thriving, once proud, once enjoyable town is constantly shrinking.
I wish they would stop using "Our Home Town" to try to reach an "imagined greatness" just so they can say "Look, I made the paper again". "I'm really important".
Arkansas City will never be exactly like Wichita. Our founding fathers wouldn't want it to be. And neither do I.
Personally, I am for the yard parking ban. The ordinance had several exceptions to temper its affects. Every city code/ordinance causes some inconvience. The focus has to be what's best for the entire community. I think where city officials could improve is articulating this part of an overall beautification/clean up plan, which residents in meetings and on surveys have said they want. That message didn't really get out.
Please keep parking in the Front Yard. I really enjoy seeing Ark City looking like the IXL of yesterday. And while you are at it, raise "Fightin' ****s" in your backyard too. Winfield doesn't have enough reasons to laugh at us anymore. null
As of this writing, Kevin, owner of jim's shamrock station, has 16 vehicles on his lot . He has 1 van parked in front of our apartments and a big blue van parked on A st. beside our apts blocking our mailbox. He has 3 other cars parked on A st beside his station. We have 4 spaces on Madison in front of apts. We have 6 apartments occupied, and 3 spaces available. All we are is an extension of his gas station. He has parked 3 vehicles at the same time twice. The van in front has been parked there 25 of the last 28 days. We have gone to police and city inspectors to no avail. Apparently it is legal to park anywhere for 72 hours. We were pressured by the city to clean and paint and clean our lots. we did this. So WHY do we have to live across from what amounts to a salvage yard ???? We have tenants that have had to carry their kids and groceries in the snow from almost a block away because Kevin insists on taking up places in front of our homes. We complained to police, but all he has to do is move them every 3 days. So he just rotates them in over here. Our tenants have taken to parking on the grass on our lot to cut the distance going from car to house. We have 2 handicapped tenants and 1 elderly person. When dad was taken to hospital, just before he died, I had to drive up on sidewalk to lessen his burden, he had COPD. I have had it with the whole situation. We have no choice but park on the grass.
